The Grass Is Greener. . .

To just about everyone, the grass always seems greener on the other side of the fence, but those of us who know much about lawn care also know that the really vibrant grass growing in their yard is almost always sitting on a septic tank.

Sometimes things look nice and pretty from a distance but when you get really close you begin to smell something kind of smelly.

Some people church-hop. . .it keeps them looking nice and pretty from a distance but as people get closer they begin to smell the crap and then they're off to their next church.

Some people want things to be exciting and entertaining or they're going somewhere else where they will be entertained. . .but 20 years of exciting and entertaining as the primary drive will leave them a very shallow Christian, if they're a Christian at all.

Amen! And isn't always ironic that the "crap" that we tend to want to run from in our lives or in churches or whatever, is the same "crap" that God wants to use to make us more vibrant people and to accomplish His purposes and glorify Himself through our lives. Couldn't have said it better myself bro! :)

So, what about churches that exist under that concept that to have depth means you can't have excitement and entertainment?

Can a church be both a life changing body and be abuzz with excitement?

One of your friends who is joining our church made the comment today that as soon as you walk in the door you can feel the vitality. And that's the greatest excitement of all. Changed lives.

But it doesn't have to be boring!

Rick, you're right.

Swinging too far with depth only or swinging too far to entertainment/excitement only creates a problem. There needs to be a good balance.

But we get it all wrong when it becomes a performance, a venue for entertainment. Those churches who think depth equates to lacking humor, dry, stiff, etc. with no excitement or entertainment have got it all wrong too. They also have it wrong if they expect people to become excited about the dry and boring stuff.
